HAND-CRAFTED & UNIQUE METALWORK

The Dancing Hammer draws upon a range of decorative styles including traditional, contemporary, medieval, art deco, art nouveau, rustic, and industrial. You can see these influences and more in the works displayed below in the Showcase and Metalwork Portfolio. Organic motifs and flowing scrolls figure prominently in his pieces, but funky shapes and quirky lines are also part of his design repertoire.

Large and small, John’s designs pay great attention to proportion, transition, line, detail, and finish, and the completed products carry out their functions with beauty, strength, and flair. Some of his products shown here are one-of-a-kind commissions. He takes great care to fit them into their intended homes or to create new focal points in a room or outside space—whatever the client needs. Other works are inspirations straight out of John’s head and intended to develop brand new looks in metal or to experiment with novel shapes and finishes. Before executing final designs, John does numerous sketches, carries out full scale drawings, and forges sample sections. It is an exciting process as he thoughtfully steps back to refine each evolving piece and adjust its look and feel.

John works from new, raw stock right off the rack as well as from rusted and corroded materials. He does a lot of repurposing as evidenced from the old gears, tools, and hardware in his creations. And although his first love will always be basic ferrous metals, he also pounds with pleasure on copper, bronze, brass, aluminum, and stainless steel.
